Leafs manage to solve stellar effort by Cam Ward

It was a close one, and it took overtime, but the Toronto Maple Leafs put another one in the Win column at home last night.

it was a night for Tim Connolly who had both goals for the Leafs as they skated away with a 2-1 Win in Overtime.

it was the first time the Leafs had ever gone 0-0 into the third period, and that was all thanks to the remarkable play of Cam Ward.

Through out the game the Leafs dominated play, at one point in the 2nd period shots were 21-7 for the Leafs. But Cam Ward was up to the challenge. Stopping a pair of strong 2-on-1 chances and denying Phil Kessel on a couple of occasions.

It was Clarke MacArthur who started the play that netted the Leafs first goal. He stormed into the Carolina zone, slammed the brakes and threw a wrister towards Ward. Through some traffic, Connolly was able to put a stick on it, and it scooted just between Ward’s pad and the post.

The Leafs had killed off all the penalties they faced in the game, but as always seems to be the case recently, their PK was nearly their downfall.

With about 4 mins left in the 3rd, Lupul got his stick up on a hurricane player and was sent to the box.

About 1 min into the penalty, a pass right through the crease found former Leaf Ponikarovsky who slammed it home.

It was a disappointing turn of events as the Leafs had led throughout the game and failed again on the PK.

But overtime proved to be just what the Leafs needed as a Lupul slapper from the top of the circle squeezed through Ward, the Carolina defence got it away from the net briefly, but it was batted back by Lupul with Connolly there to put the game away.

Reimer gets his first win with a .947 save %.

The Leafs will face Buffalo on friday.
